Ledger Drawings Are Standouts at TEFAF NY

The New York Times

Martha Schwendener of the New York Times highlights Ledger Drawings attributed to Southern Arapaho warrior artist Cedar Tree as one of a handful of standouts from TEFAF New York Spring 2022. ‘Depicting battles and perhaps ceremonies or rituals,’ the author notes, ‘they offer vital windows into Indigenous history.’

Made with crayon and graphite on lined paper, the Cedar Tree Ledger Drawings date from around 1880. The works exhibited at TEFAF are attributed to two distinct artists and were likely drafted on the Cheyenne and Arapaho Agency in Darlington, Oklahoma. The drawings were selected from presentations by 91 exhibitors.
