Ledger Drawings Selected as a Highlight from Frieze New York

Frieze Magazine

The Association of Professional Art Advisors (APAA) has selected three Ledger Drawings attributed to Lakota warrior artist Wanbli Hito (Roan Eagle, b. 1863) as some of the greatest works to collect under $25,000 from Frieze Viewing Room. Part of an exhibition of 19th century Lakota Ledger Art curated by critically acclaimed artist and filmmaker Dana Claxton for Donald Ellis Gallery, the images depict Native American warriors on horseback. 'Nothing in these drawings is superfluous,’ the author notes. They are ‘complex and often mournful images,' frequently depicting warrior prowess in the form of exploits of battle. Created on the Northern Plains ca. 1890, the author states, they are ‘key documents of a struggle for national sovereignty in the midst of invasion, occupation and trauma.’
