This exceptional ledger drawing is one of 4 drawings collected by Indian Agent William Courtenay, who served at Fort Berthold, Dakota Territory, from the 1870’s to the early 1880’s. While there Courtenay amassed a sizeable collection of “Indian Curiosities” together with an extensive archive of documentary materials. These include two original signed treaty documents between the Sioux, Arikara, Hidatsa and Mandan tribes, his 1881 auction sale catalogue of “Indian Curiosities from Fort Berthold, Dakota” and two letters addressed to Courtenay from General George A. Custer.
