Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas (b. 1954) is a highly acclaimed Haida artist and author. He is known for reinterpreting Northwest Coast formline design with riffs on Japanese manga to create fluid imagery that reflects oral tradition and his own environmental activism. After decades working in the Haida Nation's successful campaign to protect its biocultural diversity on Haida Gwaii Yahgulanaas is now living and working in Vancouver, BC. He is the descendant of revered artists Isabella Edenshaw (1842-1926), Charles Edenshaw (ca. 1839-1920) and Delores Churchill (b. 1929).Largely self-taught, Yahgulanaas’ works are in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle; the Humboldt Forum, Berlin; and the British Museum, London.
